Within my project ‘Out of the Ordinary’ I explored the theme of ‘Behind closed curtains’. Exploring different activities that happen once those curtains close and who you become in the form of a zine. Turning something so mundane, closing the curtains, and putting a twist on the theme to create different ways to visually communicate ideas. This challenged my creativity in making something typically boring, becoming exciting for viewers.
The layout of the Zine followed subthemes within: exhibitionism, overthinking, mourning and consent. Each of these imagery’s used different processes/collaborated more than one together.
My initial processes started with a mood board to collect imagery and some artist inspiration. My initial artist - ‘Adams Carvalho - uses a more illustrative style which then inspired me to use mono-printing as I wanted to avoid using digital drawing techniques and this process is similar. These outcomes were successful within my work but only when the image was printed on fabric. The pieces that came out on paper looks very gritty and distorted whereas the fabric mono prints came out clean. This was then used for one of my pages on ‘consent’.
Then exploring the use of fabrics and creating a more interactive page for the audience on exhibtionism to present discomfort. By making the page textured and completely open it further adds to the idea of exhibtionism and how it can create someone to feel so uncomfortable once unconsensual exposure is performed. The materials used to make these two pieces (images below) are: faux leather, canvas fabric, embroidery thread, buttons and paint. These were presented at the beginning of the zine to push forward the idea of discomfort and a naked stomach and boobs is not something you’d expect to see everyday.
Images of zine are soon to be added!
