Working from home is difficult within finding inspiration and motivation to make work. Being stuck in the same surrounding all day, everyday its very isolating and draining. Finding inspiration isn't easy when trapped in the house, not the normal creative experience at all (not to mention the distractions of Netflix or nap).

Unfortunately there isn't much I can do about this situation other than deal with it for the time being, productivity throughout a pandemic is hard for anyone. Even writing this now I have had multiple distractions from family, pets and my phone(phone being the main culprit).

Starting a project at home with limited resources and lack of work space is very difficult, however, within this project is still managed to use lino, clay, photography and painting to experiment with how I could communicate displacement.

Throughout this project I chose to use shape, line, colour and tone as my formal elements to focus on because I decided to focus on curvilinear. These formal elements, I felt go hand in hand with curves and their form. Within shape I explored the use of stripping away circles and peeling back their form. A series of hollowed out circles but if they were all together it would make a filled circle. Peeling away at the curved form but also exploring how taking away from the circle can affect how a viewer sees your work – creating a balance in composition throughout from the contrast of filled circles and empty circles. Through this exploration of shape, it naturally led to the use of line within some of my trials.

Using these lines within my work it presents movement of the shapes by taking away and overlapping the circles, adding layers and depth into the structure. Line is used by the sections that are overlapping filled in circles which creates a whole new circle. Along with this I have used colour throughout my work. Initially I created monochrome lino prints however I did not find this successful within showing the layers within the piece. By using colour, I found it separated the shapes and layers within, specifically within my painting – using different paints to show these layers/overlapping circles. Further shown within my outcome creating a 3D piece which further separated but created union within the circles within my piece. Kandinsky used this within his work (which I explored in my sketchbook) to show the separation and layers within shape and colour. This was an inspiration for my use of clay and the use of layering within my work. Further within inspiration throughout my work was Roseanne Watson further within her use of layering and manipulating the curves of a circle within her work to present this layering. Within the exploration of my work, I focused upon curvilinear and union which similarly is used within both of these artists work and their exploration of shape. However, within my artists I used them as a visual reference rather than a material reference as I wanted to communicate how I explore shape within my materials.

Using 3D and 2D forms to create my work along with photography – within this project I focused much more on the creation of work and trialling as much as possible. Rather than copying material techniques of artists I used their work as a visual reference. Overall, I found the development of my work to be successful along with the development of 2D to 3D work within this project. However, if I were to make any changes, I would like to create my clay pieces on a much larger scale along with collaborating my materials that I have used all together – this is shown within my photoshoot by painting upon my face, but I would have liked to have tried lino printing upon clay to show the pattern upon the clay along with the pattern that is the sculpture. Nether the less, my project is successful within showing displacement using curvilinear by overlapping and stripping away the layers and colours of shape/circles.

Overall, I found motivation for this project and working at home harder than I expected within creating a deeper concept which I normally like to use within my work. Even though this project is aesthetically successful, conceptually I found it not to be. But overall, I believe this project fills the brief within my exploration and development within my work. I will use my fast creation process using a variety of materials within my future projects – with a full conceptualised sub-theme I believe this could have been a more successful project.
